Utah and I - SLC (part 2)

Day 183 / Mile 22,265

It's been a few years since I visited Salt Lake City, which I often did a decade ago as a pro snowboarder and had great times in their fluffy power and [at the time] big street rails. The most recent time was to photograph Olympic gold medalist Sage Kotsenburg for an Arnette advertisement. My friend Brendan Gerard who I've gotten published a few times now lives there and was excited to catch with him and the rest of the locals.

When many people think of SLC they typically relate it to the large Mormon community there.

I've seen many LDS temples and am always fascinated with their striking architecture.

We hiked up to H rock in Highland. I want to repaint it into a big R.

It's a great view from there. Gerry approves.

Another popular painted spot is Suicide Rock. We met these random girls who just finished spray painting an alien near the top.

I finally got to check out the Spedellis restaurant , and partied with my former Arnette riders Ben Bogart and Ben Bilodeau. Aaron Biittner poured up some drinks on Pat Moore's 'shot-board' to start up the good times.

Gerry, Shane, and I poached the $90 Chromeo show from the hillside across from the venue. We had a great view in the trees with some hammocks.

This one is bizarre, especially because this is prior to any metal rock genre was invented. Nobody knows exactly how she died, records just say she passed away from 'natural causes'. Even more weird, her husband who died years later is buried on the opposite side of the graveyard!

I went camping with a big group of friends a couple hour drive outside of town. It was really fun to do what I've been doing, but getting to share it with a posse.

Shane, Gerry, and Mac taking a break while on a hike in the Unitas. ...the elevation was over 10k, so I was glad to catch my breath for a minute.

Bogart has a turtle named Felicia. She's pretty mean, but I wanted to have a photoshoot anyways.

While reading a book in the library from a photographer who's done a full lifetime of self-portraits, I caught this reflection of myself. I thought it was a pretty cool moment.

Since 1992 I've gone snowboarding every year, with one season getting near 300 days when I coached at a Mt Hood summer camp. This year I almost broke the tradition, but a friend loaned me their gear so we hiked into the last remaining snow from winter.

We found this little windlip and built a jump into it. This fs air to fakie was a self-portrait shot by the remote in my hand. Still got it!

This whole visit to SLC ended up lasting 2 weeks. It was a nice break from driving, felt good to catch up on editing pics from the last month, but was great to see some friends. Now I'm off to see more of Utah's amazing geography, and heading back south.
